MX Laps privacy

MX Laps is a lap timer for motocross. This page says what it keeps about you, where, and who can see it. In short: your rides are yours; friends you pick see your lap times; nothing is sold or used for ads.

On your phone

Your sessions (rides from the box or a watch), saved tracks, rider profiles and goals stay in the app on your phone. Nothing leaves the phone unless you sign in to an account or make a backup.

Your account

If you sign in, the same things are copied to the MX Laps account server, so your other phones signed in to the same account get them. The server is a computer at the MX Laps family's home; it is reached over the home Wi-Fi, or from anywhere through Tailscale's encrypted tunnel (HTTPS). It keeps your username, a scrambled form of your password (never the password itself), and what the app syncs. Nobody else can read your rides with your account.

Friends

Only riders you accept as friends (or who use your invite or QR code) see your name, race number, class, bike, and each session's name, day and lap times. They never get your GPS positions, your map or where you ride, unless you share a session's map with them, one session at a time; even then never your heart rate. To match the same track on the leaderboards, the server compares finish lines and laps itself; positions are never sent to anyone. Riders can only be found by username or race number if they allow it (Settings, Privacy and legal).

Your health data

MX Laps can read three things from Health Connect, only if you allow it: workouts (when you started and stopped one on your watch), workout routes (where the watch's GPS says you went), and heart rate during those workouts. It shows your heart rate next to your lap times, and turns a workout with a route into a session on the map. Your heart rate goes to your account (above), never to friends. MX Laps never writes to Health Connect. Turn the permissions off at any time in Health Connect (Settings, Health Connect, App permissions, MX Laps).

Notifications

If you allow them, the app asks the account server every 15 minutes or so whether there is news for you (a friend request, a friend's new ride) and shows it on your phone. Nothing else.

Deleting

Delete a session in the app and it is deleted from your account too. Delete your whole account in the app (Settings, Privacy and legal, Delete my account): your account, rides, friends and shares are removed from the server at once. What stays on your phone is yours to delete with the app.

Young riders

Riders under 13 should use MX Laps with a parent, who helps set up the account and picks friends with them.

Questions

Ask the rider who invited you, or the MX Laps family.
